Fujifilm X-E5 – The X-E That We Have Been Waiting For

Fujifilm X-E5 is the newest camera in the X-E series and of course in the Fujifilm X series family as well. There was a saying that this series has been a lot of ups and downs with speculation about this series been axed. But it survived everytime and always been refining and Fujifilm always trying yo positioning it better.

Intro

The X-E series has always been considered the little brother to the X-Pro line. Designed to be a more affordable option for photographers who love the rangefinder style but can’t justify the X-Pro’s price, the X-E models traditionally came with slightly lower specs and a plastic build.

However, things has shaken up a bit with the X-E5. It is now much better build, more premium than it predecessors and improve durability.

Before we go any further, let’s take a look at the lenses I paired with the X-E5.

Design, Build Quality, Handling & The Shutter…

Looking back at the Fujifilm X-E series, one thing that immediately stands out is how the design language has evolved. Earlier models carried a softer, curved body shape, but with the newer iterations, Fujifilm has shifted toward a sharper, more refined blocky look.

Interestingly, the X-E1, the very first in the lineup, was actually a bit larger and taller than the brand-new X-E5, yet it still managed to be much lighter thanks to the plastic built body.

The X-E4 was where Fujifilm took a bold leap into minimalism. Some photographers appreciated the stripped-back approach, while others felt it went a little too far. The X-E5 continues along that same minimal design path, but with a few thoughtful additions that make it feel like Fujifilm listened to the feedback.

The shutter, however, doesn’t feel heavy at all. In fact, it’s gentle and refined compared to earlier models, giving the camera a pleasing shooting experience.

A welcome return is the flip-up LCD display. I don’t take selfies often, but the flip-up screen is perfect for capturing low-angle shots.

What’s been brought back?
The hand grip. While it’s not the chunkiest grip you’ll find, the small front and rear bumps do improve handling compared to the gripless X-E4. It’s still not perfect, many will likely want an additional grip accessory, but the difference is noticeable and very welcome.

What’s been added?
From the front, you’ll now spot a focus mode selector, a control lever, and a function button, small but meaningful upgrades for usability. Around the back, the “Q” button has been moved into the same position as the X100VI, and Fujifilm has also added a rear command dial. These tweaks make the X-E5 feel more versatile without cluttering the minimalist design.

If you’ve shot with previous X-E cameras, one of the first things you’ll notice when picking up the X-E5 is the weight. At 445g, it’s the heaviest in the series (most predecessors hovered around 350g). But with that extra heft comes a sense of sturdiness, thanks to its solid aluminum build.

One of the most distinctive design touches on the X-E5 is the new film simulation dial built into the top plate window. Traditionally, that little window displayed film count, and now, it tells you which film simulation you’re using. A subtle but clever nod to the good film days, and of course, the Instax cameras.

The dial itself comes with 10 film simulation slots: 6 fixed presets and 4 that can be customized. (For comparison, the X-M5 offers 12 slots.) FS1 to FS3 can be assigned to any simulation you like, including your own recipes. The final slot, labeled “C” for Custom, lets you quickly change simulations on the fly using the front command dial.

Sensor and Processor

The X-E5 is equipped with the familiar 40MP X-Trans CMOS 5 HR sensor alongside the powerful X-Processor 5. It is the same combination found in Fujifilm’s X-H2, X-T5, X-T50, and even the X100VI.

40 megapixels might feel like overkill if your main goal is to share photos on social media, but having that level of resolution opens up plenty of creative possibilities, from large prints to detailed cropping. It’s a thoughtful move by Fujifilm, and one that photographers will no doubt appreciate.

Image Quality

40 megapixels image quality is superior. Pairing the right lenses help to optimize the best image quality Fujifilm offers. If you pair up with the Fujifilm older generation of lenses or other third party lenses, you might notice some levels of softness if you are the picky one.

Performance

For those who have experienced the X-Processor 5, you already know the kind of performance it delivers. This is the very same processor powering the flagship GFX100 II, and it brings that same level of speed and refinement into the X series. When paired with Fujifilm’s latest generation of lenses, the results are nothing short of outstanding, showcasing some of the best performance Fujifilm has to offer.

That said, the eye-AF tracking performs well by Fujifilm’s current standards. It sticks onto the subject most of the time, though every now and then it might wander off a little. When I put it side by side with my X-T5, the focusing feels slightly slower (both running on default settings). But honestly, it’s not a deal breaker for me.

IBIS

Similar to all other latest series of X-Series camera bodies, it is equipped with 7 stops of compensation. In short, the IBIS in this camera works impressively well.

Battery Life

When it comes to battery, I am prepared and expecting that NP-W126S to be the battery model and we all know how small the battery capacity this model can be.

According to CIPA rating, it is about 300 shots. But based on my usage with everything in default, I managed to squeeze about 480 shots. And that including transferring 50 shots from the camera to the phone. This result of mine shared similarity with the X-T50.

In my opinion, the number of shots seems to be good enough for a 2-3 days travel occasion and probably a good one day coverage for photowalks. If you think the battery is not good enough, I will suggest getting another 1 to 2 spare batteries as the battery is quite pocketable and compact. Alternatively, standby a PD powerbank to charge via the USB-C to extend the juice whenever needed.

Feedback

Like all the rest of the X-E series that come before it, it does not equipped with Dial Lock Release like the X-T5. This lock is so beneficial because it can prevent accidental dial changes. I encountered this when my camera is place inside the bag and probably some movement has pushes the dial without noticing.

There hasn’t been any upgrade to the Electronic View Finder (EVF) or the rear LCD display and they are still at 2.36 million dots and 1.04 million dots respectively. I do wish Fujifilm had pushed a little further in this area, especially to better justify the price increase.

Price Point

This new generation comes in at a noticeably higher price than the previous one. The body alone is priced at 1599 USD, and in Singapore, it’s going for 2099 SGD. To put things in perspective, the last model was launched at 1449 SGD back in 2021.

Even after adjusting for inflation, which would bring that number closer to 1700 SGD, the new price still sits quite a bit higher. Whether that premium is worth paying really depends on what photographers feel they’re getting out of it.

Others

When it comes to the Fujifilm X-E5 and X100VI, the comparisons never seem to end. Which one is better? Why choose this over that? Which camera really gives you the most value? The debates go on, often shaped by personal preference and bias. That’s completely fair, and I respect that.

From my perspective, both cameras serve different purposes and are designed to meet the unique needs of each photographer and shooting experiences. There’s really no right or wrong choice here. What matters most is understanding your own shooting style and priorities. Once you’re clear about what you need, picking the right camera becomes a much simpler decision. It might sound straightforward, but in reality, finding the right one often takes a bit more time and consideration.

The X-E5 has a little trick up its sleeve, a classic display mode in the electronic viewfinder. It’s an interesting addition that feels like a nod to nostalgia for senior generations users, while also giving younger generations a taste of the past.

Who is this for?

If you are interested in jumping into Fujifilm ecosystem and find that price of the X-E5 price is too steep, there are other models available, for instance, X-M5.

Fujifilm is always about the overall user experience from using the gear, to click the shutter and the final results in front of your eyes. Each camera user experience is different somehow and finding the right one is always a challenge.

If possible, give it a try in your nearest camera store or better recommendation is to rent it out for a week or two with a few lenses to try. The later one is a costly option, but probably a better one than rush buy.

Conclusion

The X-E series has always held a special charm for me. I still keep my X-E3 around, and while I regret missing the chance to pick up the X-E4 before Fujifilm suddenly discontinued it, I wasn’t willing to pay inflated resale prices. So when the X-E5 was announced, it was an easy decision. I knew I had to get it.

Thanks to the ripple effect from the viral X100V video, Fujifilm cameras have been attracting attention well beyond the photography community. And naturally, the X-E5 has also found its way into the spotlight.

Yes, the X-E5 is the most expensive model in the X-E lineup so far, but in my opinion, it’s also the best one yet. I absolutely enjoy the shooting experience this rangefinder-style body offers—it’s a completely different vibe compared to my X-T5. As I’ve said before, every camera has its own purpose, crafted to meet the specific needs and styles of different photographers. The X-E5 is no exception, and that’s exactly what makes it so special.

Meike 55mm f1.8 Pro – What Makes a Pro II

The Meike 55mm f1.8 Pro is the second lens in their professional-grade lineup, released shortly after their first Pro lens. This quick follow-up suggests that Meike is pretty serious about expanding its offerings for APS-C users.

For photographers, this means more choices, and this is always a good thing, though it can make deciding between third-party options a bit more challenging for us.

Intro

A 55mm focal length isn’t a common one, but when mounted on an APS-C body, it gives an effective field of view of around 82.5mm, very close to the popular 85mm perspective. Similarly, that goes the same for the 50mm (in APS-C format). Ultimately, what matters more to me is the total package: image quality, usability, and whether it justifies the asking price. Let’s dive into that.

Design and Build Quality

Weighing in at 365 grams and sporting a 58mm filter thread, the 55mm f1.8 Pro is nearly indistinguishable from Meike’s 85mm f1.8 Pro lens in appearance. Both share the same minimalist design language, similar weight, and identical build materials. The primary visual difference lies in the 85mm’s slightly larger size and its 62mm filter thread.

Meike has kept things consistent across both lenses, including a smooth, clickable aperture ring with satisfying tactile feedback and a frictionless manual focus ring. A plastic lens hood is also included.

Image Quality

To my eyes, the 55mm f1.8 Pro produces slightly better image quality than the 85mm f1.8 Pro. Center sharpness is notably strong, with only minor softness in the corners—nothing alarming in my opinion. Vignetting is present as expected but mild and acceptable in real-world use. Chromatic aberration appears to be well-controlled, with no distracting color fringing in high-contrast areas.

The bokeh is smooth and natural, with a more refined background blur compared to the 85mm. This helps isolate subjects effectively without any jarring distractions in the background.

The lines from the sunstar aren’t well-defined, and it will also introduce some ghosting flares.

Focusing

It uses the common Stepper Motor (STM), and the focusing performance seems much better than that of the 85mm counterpart. Although I did encounter some focus pullings in bright daylight, it is still less than that of the 85mm counterpart. Focusing speed is decent, but I did encounter 2-3 mis-focused shots when the focus is locked with the green box. I hope it will be fixed with a firmware update in the future.

Minimum Focus Distance (MFD)

The minimum focus distance is 55cm, which is typical for a lens of this focal length. I didn’t notice any loss in image quality when shooting at close range, which is always a plus

Price Point

Priced at $330 USD, the Meike 55mm f1.8 Pro sits in a competitive space. Here’s how it stacks up against rivals:

While the Sigma is a class leader among the third parties (I am excited to see what Viltrox 56mm f1.2 Pro can do), it’s nearly twice the price. Meike seems to be offering a solid middle ground in terms of price, performance, and build quality.

Others

Meike continues to place the USB-C port for firmware updates inside the rear lens mount. This is something I have come to appreciate for its neat and protected design.

Although there’s no official word on weather sealing, the red ring around the lens mount appears to be made of a rubber-like material, which may offer some degree of environmental protection.

Oh yes, if you wish to do manual focusing, you have to switch to manual on the focus mode selector switch on the lens and not on the camera body. I guess from the manufacturer’s perspective, it is easier to switch on the lens than on the camera body.

Who is this for?

The 55mm focal length is versatile, suiting portraits and product photography well, while also offering an interesting perspective for street, documentary, and even landscape work. It’s a nice “in-between” focal length that can handle various genres with ease.

Conclusion

Compared to the 85mm Pro, I find the 55mm easier to use when composing shots, especially full-body portraits. Since you don’t need to step back as far. It also makes communication with your subject more natural. While the 85mm delivers better background compression, the difference isn’t a dealbreaker in most scenarios.

Meike has done a commendable job with the Pro series. While f1.8 isn’t extremely fast by today’s “Pro” standards, the lens offers a great balance between price, performance, and portability. For photographers looking for a lightweight, affordable, and well-built lens in the short-telephoto range, the 55mm f/1.8 Pro is a compelling choice.

Meike 85mm f1.8 Pro – What Makes A Pro?

It’s been almost six months since I last got my hands on a Meike lens, and today I’m checking out something a bit different: Meike’s very first Pro lens. 

That alone is enough to get me curious. However, the focal length itself isn’t new to me; I’ve used it before and, to be honest, it never really left a great impression. But every lens is different, and with this being Meike’s first step into the “Pro” territory, I am genuinely interested to see if this one can turn things around. Maybe it’ll surprise me.

Intro

Meike launched the 85mm f1.8 Pro in November 2024, and let’s just say: it definitely turned some heads. Not because it’s an 85mm lens (we’ve all seen those before), but because “f1.8″ and “Pro” in the same name? 

That’s not something you hear every day. It left a lot of people curious, and maybe even a little skeptical. I mean, isn’t “Pro” usually reserved for the big, heavy, brighter aperture, bank-account-crushing glass? So now the big question is: what actually makes a lens “Pro”? I’m here to test it out and see if this one earns the badge or if it’s just wearing the title for fun.

Design and Build Quality

The first thing I noticed about the lens design is the noticeably bright red ring at the rear lens. Like the Meike 33mm f1.4 and Meike 55mm f1.4, it takes inspiration from the Canon L lens.

The build quality is great. It comes with full metal construction and weighs about 390 grams. The weight is well-distributed across the lens body, which feels well-balanced when holding the lens in hand.

It comes with a 62mm filter size, pretty small for a “Pro” lens, and thanks to that, it allows photographers to buy considerably cheaper filters. It is also equipped with an aperture ring. The aperture ring is noticeably better than the f1.4 siblings. The gentle clicky aperture ring is smoother to control with minimum effort. As for the manual focus ring, it is frictionless and smooth.

Like all Pro lenses, it does come with a lens hood as well. But it is made out of plastic.

Image Quality

In terms of image quality, I’d say it’s quite decent. While it’s not as tack-sharp as Fujifilm’s latest generation of prime lenses, the sharpness is still respectable, and the contrast holds up well. Vignetting is noticeable but fairly mild. As for chromatic aberration, it appears to be well-controlled and not easily noticeable to my eyes.

When it comes to background rendering, I really like how this lens performs. It produces a pleasing blur that isolates the subject nicely without being distracting.

Focusing

Although this lens uses a Stepper Motor (STM), the autofocus speed isn’t exactly class-leading. It occasionally hunts, even in bright daylight, and can be slow to lock focus—especially noticeable when shifting from the minimum focusing distance to infinity. This is an area I hope Meike can improve through a future firmware update.

On the upside, I didn’t encounter any misfocus issues during my shoots. The manual focus ring is smooth and responsive, no complaints there.

Minimum Focus Distance (MFD)

85cm MFD is pretty far, but it is considered pretty impressive for the 85mm focal length. In my opinion, the image quality retains pretty well and shows no sign of degradation or sort of.

Price Point

Before diving into the price of the Meike 85mm f1.8 Pro, let’s take a look at how other “Pro” grade lenses in a similar focal range are priced. The Viltrox 75mm f1.2 comes in at $580, the Sirui Aurora 85mm f1.4 is priced at $500, and the Fujifilm 90mm f2 sits at around $950.

In comparison, the Meike 85mm f1.8 Pro is priced at just $340, making it by far the most affordable “Pro” lens in this category.

Others

The lens features a USB-C port located at the rear, likely for firmware updates. However, there’s no official mention of weather sealing or dust protection. That said, the red ring, made of a silicone-like material, suggests there may be some level of sealing, even if it’s not explicitly stated.

One thing to keep in mind: if you want to shoot in manual focus, you’ll need to switch to manual mode using the focus switch on the lens itself, not the camera’s focus mode selector. I’ve occasionally picked up my gear only to find the lens stuck in manual focus, usually because the lens switch was accidentally toggled in my bag. So, if the lens isn’t focusing, don’t panic, just check that switch first.

Who is this for?

At 127.5mm (in 35mm format), this is a focal length that have good compression that suitable for portraits and product shots. That said, there is no reason why it cannot works for other genres.

Conclusion

For this focal length, or anything close to it, the market doesn’t offer many options. However, the few available are spaced out quite a bit in terms of pricing, which actually makes the decision-making process easier since they don’t overlap much.

Coming back to my earlier question: does it truly deserve the “Pro” label? In my opinion, it earns about half of it. (Probably a bit more than half.)

On the positive side, it delivers solid image quality, has a sturdy build, offers a manageable weight (for comparison: Viltrox 75mm f1.2 is 670 grams), and includes a well-designed aperture ring that enhances the overall shooting experience. On the downside, the autofocus can be inconsistent—focus pulling is noticeable, and there are times it struggles to lock focus even in daylight, which can be frustrating.

That said, Meike did a commendable job balancing affordability, weight, and a wide aperture while still maintaining good image quality. I would love to see a wide-angle “Pro” lens from them soon, hopefully completing the trinity.

Meike 33mm f1.4 – Checking All The Boxes, Again?

When it comes to the 33mm focal length (or 50mm in full-frame equivalent), there aren’t many options available. Unlike the 50mm to 56mm range, which is well-represented by nearly every brand, the 33mm/35mm focal length seems to lack strong competition in the market.

Meike likely recognized this gap in the market and released their 33mm f1.4 to attract more attention from photographers like us.

Intro

There are some teases for this lens from the company and rumors before it’s official announcement in August 2024.

Prior to this lens, Meike released the quite impressive 55mm f1.4, which I tested and really liked. I often recommend it to anyone looking for a compact and lightweight portrait lens. Because of my positive experience with that lens, I have high expectations for the Meike 33mm f/1.4.

Design and Build Quality

If you have the Meike 55mm f1.4, then you will be treated with many familiarities with this lens. It shares the same design language, same build quality, and same handling experience.

This 55mm filter-size lens comes with an aperture ring. It still has the same stiffness and same clickiness level applied to the aperture ring. The stiff level is strong enough to prevent accidental change in aperture value. This can be a beneficial thing for me, but definitely not so much for the videographer.

The lens still uses a plastic build, but it doesn’t feel cheap. Holding it feels quite solid, and it doesn’t attract fingerprints easily. While I’m not sure how much weight was shaved off to bring the total weight down to 314 grams, I believe Meike must have carefully considered this balance during the design process.

Image Quality

The Meike 55mm f1.4 gives me a very satisfying result. A result that has decent image quality, good level of contrast, and good chromatic aberration control. The Meike 33mm f1.4 follows the same. After knowing that it does not produce any soft unusable result, I am very happy to use this lens wide-open.

Vignetting, however, is still present at wide-open. In my opinion, it is acceptable as I am totally fine with a small level of vignetting but not too heavy too disturbing to the overall viewing experience.

When comes to sun stars, it is just fine. The lines are not well-defined or detailed. Just fine soft lines. Of course, it does introduce some flares too.

Focusing

Focusing is snappy in most scenarios but sometimes I do encounter the lens is not able to focus on any object at wide-open in bright outdoor and well-lit indoor environment.

This could be a bug or just the copy I have and it only happens if I shoot at f1.4 and did not encounter similar behaviour in any other aperture values. I hope there will have a firmware update to address the focusing issue at wide-open.

If you are concerning about lens breathing, this lens has actually one of the good minimal lens breathing among the third-party manufacturers.

Minimum Focus Distance (MFD)

40cm minimum focus distance is not the shortest. Using XF33mm f1.4 as a benchmark, it’s 30cm and Sirui 33mm f1.2 shared the same MFD as the Meike 33mm f1.4.

In most scenarios, short MFD does not really impact to my day-to-day shoots. Just that occasionally I wish it can close up more when I wish to do close-up shots. Nevertheless, I am glad that the image quality does not reduce significantly when taken at MFD.

Price Point

229.99 USD is what it is selling at this time of posting. It is about 3.5 times cheaper than the XF33mm f1.4 (799 USD) but comparable with the other third-party lenses like Viltrox 33mm f1.4 (279 USD) and Sirui 33mm f1.2 (279 USD).

Others

It has the USB-C port located at the rear lens to allow easy firmwares upgrades in the future. And similar to the Meike 55mm f1.4, this lens does not come with any weather sealing or weather resistance.

Who is this for?

With this price point, it is easy to recommend new photographers who plan to buy their first prime lens. For the professional, this can be a good getaway lens to enjoy the love of photography.

Conclusion

This lens may not be perfect in every aspect, but it offers solid performance for its price. In my view, Meike made a smart move by introducing this focal length to expand their lineup. I love how compact the lens is and how usable the image results are. Most importantly, I enjoy using it a lot. I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for a budget-friendly option without breaking the bank.

Alongside the Meike 55mm f1.4, the Meike 33mm f1.4 is one of the best lenses to complement it. What’s still missing, though, is a 23mm focal length (or perhaps even 22mm, given the 55mm and 33mm in the lineup) to complete a “Trinity” of lenses from Meike. While there’s no official word from the manufacturer yet, we can only hope they’ll eventually release this focal length to round out the set.

Meike 55mm f1.4 – Checking All the Boxes?

I mentioned before that I do not have very good experience with Meike’s first autofocus lens. When I received this lens, I set myself a low expectation of this lens.

Sometimes, I wonder whether the manufacturers communicate with one another or they coincidentally have the same thoughts at the same time. This is the third portrait lens that are available to photographers in just the first half of 2024. Anyway, I feel there is a sudden strong competition with this focal length in this budget segment.

Intro

Meike 55mm f1.4 was announced in March 2024 and this is Meike’s second autofocus lens. I have reviewed their first X-Mount autofocus lens, the Meike 85mm f1.8, and I have my reservation with it after some testing. The announcement between the two lenses was about 1 year apart.

Before I proceed further, I appreciate the good people from Meike for sending this lens for my review. I thank them for their continuous support.

Design and Build Quality

From the first impression, the lens design seems to take inspiration from the Canon L lens (the red line ring). Secondly, the plastic build quality feels so much better than the Meike 85mm f1.8 when I hold it in my hand. The lens comes in a matte finish, so it is fingerprint-magnet-free. It’s a huge improvement in my opinion.

This 52mm filter-size lens is compact and lightweight. Only 286 grams. Oh yes, it comes with an aperture ring! Hooray! However, the ring is a little stiff compared to other lenses I have tested. At least it is clicky but the experience is not what I expected.

On the bright side, it comes with a lens hood too. As for the lens cap, it is the normal pinch-to-release lens cap but better than the ArtraLab 24mm and 35mm.

Image Quality

With my low expectations, Meike gives me a good surprise. The image quality at f1.4 is pretty good. Decently sharp and has good contrast. Although corner-to-corner sharpness is within passable to a fair standard, in general, it is fine if you do not pixel-peep.

I also think the optic glass of this lens resolves quite well with the new X-Trans CMOS 5 HR 40-megapixels sensor. Another good surprise for me.

Chromatic aberration is decently well-controlled but you still can spot it if you pixel-peep. Vignetting can be observed too but not as heavy as I have expected.

When it comes to sun effect, I think it is just fair. The lines are not clearly defined or sharp. Also, shooting directly facing the sun does come with some flares as well. So please be mindful if you dislike it.

Focusing

It comes with a Stepper Motor (STM) and the focusing speed is fast. The focusing response is pretty good from MFD to infinity. But it is still not as fast as the new generation lenses from Fujifilm like XF23mm f1.4 WR.

However, I do notice that the lens is unable to focus on the subject, even in bright daylight. It seems to have this strange phenomenon, luckily, it happens rarely. I hope they will address the issue here.

One interesting thing to note here, it comes with an AF/MF switch. If you want to switch to manual mode to shoot, you have to switch the mode via the AF/MF switch on the lens and not on the focus mode selector on your camera. I hope they can give the photographer an option to choose where to change the focus mode freely. I hope they can implement it in future firmware updates. Nevertheless, it is not a big deal.

Minimum Focus Distance (MFD)

By now, we all know there is no perfect lens in the market. The lens should have compromise(s) and it is also depending on our acceptance. Well, for Meike 55mm f1.4, the shortcoming is the MFD.

At 61cm, it is not quite on par with today’s portrait lenses but not the worse. Here are some of the MFD of the portrait lenses I have tested before:

XF56mm f1.2 WR – 50cm

XF50mm f2 – 39cm

Yongnuo 50mm f1.8 – 45cm

Sigma 56mm f1.4 – 50cm

TTArtisan 56mm f1.8 – 50cm

Why did I say not the worse? Because we have lenses that are even furthe, the classic XF56mm f1.2 and XF50mm f1. Both at 70cm. So this is something the Meike 55mm is slightly better.

Price Point

This lens comes at a very competitive price point of 199.99 USD. To name a few, TTArtisan 56mm f1.8 is priced at 158 USD and Viltrox 56mm f1.7 is priced at 169 USD in their own respective online stores.

With just 30-40 USD more, I can get aperture ring and a faster lens. So do you think it is a sweet deal?

Others

One good improvement that Meike do it right is having a few USB-C port for firmware upgrades. This is so much friendlier than the 85mm. Now I can have fewer cable management issues.

Also, I think this is also within expectation. This lens does not come with any weather sealing or weather resistance.

Who is this for?

Although it is 1mm shorter than the typical 56mm, this 82.5mm (in full frame equivalent) lens is still a portrait lens. It does not make any difference from the other portrait lens.

With this price tag, I can recommend it to any photographers new to photography or exploring photography genres like portraits. But this lens can be used for street, documentary, and product shoots.

Conclusion

The market is flooded with many third-party portrait lenses, but what makes this lens stand out is the f1.4 fast lens, aperture ring, and price point. Even though the MFD is the only drawback I have with the lens, Meike has done well with the optic quality and the focusing speed.

I feel that Meike makes a good move by penetrating the market differently and gives even more choices to the photographers in the budget segment.

All in all, I do love this lens a lot and I am excited to know that Meike is planning to release 16mm, 23mm, and 33mm. All are f1.4. (At least this is the understanding so far). I am looking forward to their arrival.

So does this lens check all the boxes? In my opinion, not all but it checks on the right boxes.

Meike 12mm f2 – Balance & Compact

One fine day, Meike contacted me to ask if I was interested in reviewing this lens. Of course I do and I told them I was going on a trip in a week. And 2 days before my flight, it arrived at my doorstep.

Intro

I have reviewed the Meike 10mm f2 just less than 6 months ago. My verdict on that lens is that it has very usable wide-open image quality but the size and weight are the 2 drawbacks I have. Meike 12mm f2 addressed the 2 drawbacks but does it have the same usable wide-open image quality?

Let’s step back a little. This lens was announced in June 2022 and that makes this lens a year and a half years old now. Is this a real concern? Probably. Because this lens was made available before the release of the X-H2 and X-T5. The most common thing about these 2 cameras is that they house the X-Trans CMOS sensor 5 HR 40 megapixels sensor. (I am not worried too much about the X-Trans 4 sensor 26 megapixels sensor and I am pretty sure they just work fine with this lens.) So another question to me is, can the lens able to resolve the new sensor?

Just for info, it comes with an E-mount and M43 mount too.

Before I begin, thank you Meike for contacting me and sending this lens over. I appreciate their tremendous support in making this review a reality.

Design and Build Quality

The Meike 12mm f2 has the same metal built quality as other Meike manual lenses I have tested thus far. But what strikes me is how compact the lens is and it is great to hold in hands. Although it is only 227 grams, I can feel the well-balanced weight of the lens, especially when I mounted it on the X-T5.

This lens shares many similarities with most of its siblings except for the Meike 10mm f2. The aperture ring is de-click which can be easily rotated by accident. Rotating the aperture ring is smooth with very little or gentle friction against your rotation direction. I think this might benefit the videographers.

Both the aperture ring and the manual focus ring are smooth and also give different levels of friction feedback.

It comes with a 62mm filter thread. Pretty acceptable filter size for its size.

Image Quality

This lens gives an 18mm (in full frame equivalent) field of view which is indeed considerably wide. I could say the image quality at wide-open is similar to the Meike 10mm f2, and the results are very usable. Contrast and sharpness are good at the center and not so much at the corners.

The chromatic aberration (CA) is considerably well-controlled but I do observe some mild CA if I blow up the shot. As for vignetting, it is broadly there. In my opinion, it seems to be heavier than the Meike 10mm f2 but it can get better when you step down the aperture value to f5.6.

The sun-star result is pretty sharp, but not that tad sharp. Please be aware that the flare can be introduced if you are trying to get the sun-star shots and direct facing any light-emitting object in your framing.

Barrel distortion seems to be pretty well-controlled. At least I did not notice any curve around the edge of the corners but typical ultrawide distortion is there. So try not to put any human at the corners when you are shooting at your waist level.

Focusing

The manual focus ring has a different level of rotation friction as compared to the aperture ring. It gives a more dampening feedback, and I like it. As for the focus throw, it depends on the photographers’ preferences, some prefer to have a shorter focus throw while some do otherwise.

Well, the focus throw of this lens is approximately 110°. It takes me a while to rotate from one end to the other. Depending on how we see it, this might benefit the videographers and help the photographers nail the shot precisely.

Minimum Focus Distance (MFD)

This lens is capable of shooting as close as 20cm, which is pretty far for an ultrawide lens. You will get quite a lot of details apart from your subject. Nevertheless, it is a lens meant to be for landscape or other similar genres.

But the image quality seems not to be at its best. At wide-open, you will get to see not-so-good sharp results at the corners. Vignetting seems to be slightly stronger as well.

Price Point

It was priced at 189 USD and now it is running a discount to 159.99 USD on Meike’s website. This is quite a good price point. For a note: Meike 10mm f2 is selling at 349.99 USD. There are not much of manual ultrawide lenses in the market. TTArtisan 17mm f1.4 is the only one that I am aware of (at this point of writing) and it is selling at 118 USD. For about a 40 USD difference, I think it is worth getting the Meike 12mm simply because it gives a 5mm wider field of view.

Others

Surprisingly, this lens comes with metal petal lens hood. This definitely gives a good gesture as not many manual lens manufacturers provides one. The look of the lens hood seems to be pretty fragile but when you hold it, you will know it is actually quite well made.

Like most manual lenses, the actual “infinity” is not at the end of the manual focus ring. It is somewhere where the “infinity” symbol is. One of the readers also informed me that it can be manually calibrated. I did not try it but I think it is possible.

Also, this lens has this phenomenon that color temperature changes between cool to warm) according to the aperture value set. If you are shooting in raw, not too much of a concern but if you are shooting purely in jpeg, maybe this is something you should take note of.

Who is this for?

This lens literally says it is meant for landscape, cityscape, astrography, and architecture genres but this is not limited to any other genres that I do not mention over here. The creativity with this lens is yours.

I can’t say much for professional photographers but I also not saying this lens is not suitable for professional photographers to commission their works. But this lens is very suitable for budget-oriented photographers looking for a decent alternative to Fujifilm’s ultrawide lens offering.

One small detail here. You might notice that the f2 is pretty much the farthest away from the other aperture values. I am not sure why is that so. Maybe it can benefit us somehow? If you know, please share it with me.

Conclusion

There is only one manufacturer ever made such a fast and compact lens beside Meike and that is Rokinon 12mm f2 and it has been in the market for years. I believe some manufacturers will catch up some days if this focal length and aperture value makes a hit.

Although not the best, this lens optic does resolve fairly with the new X-Trans 5 HR sensor. At least I did not observe extreme softness in the image quality like I do in other lenses. Sharpness and contrast are there when I nail the shot totally.

This lens is very good for beginners or photographers who hardly use such an ultrawide lens. Firstly, it is not expensive to own one. Secondly, it is compact and easily kept in the bag or inside the dry cabinet.

In my opinion, it is very clear-cut for me to choose this lens over the Meike 10mm f2. Both have very comparable great image quality but the 12mm f2 wins on the size and the cost. (I know I have repeated many times but this lens is this worthy.)

I do not mind sacrificing a 2mm (3mm full frame equivalent) lesser field of view and size does matter, especially when bringing it on a holiday trip overseas. I would rather bring a smaller alternative lens to lighten my shoulder (yes, 227 grams versus 550 grams and every gram counts in order not to injure my shoulder).

The SLR-style mirrorless camera not only surprised the Fuji community but also gained unexpected popularity from outside the Fuji community. It was a successful product. 3 years later, Fujifilm introduced the successor, X-S20, to the world. Is it attractive for the community again?

Fujifilm takes a good approach to introduce its new camera in the X-Summit Bangkok and I think it is a good move. Bangkok is one of the most popular cities for tourism and this is probably one of the best Fuji cameras for travel they are possibly the best match to showcase everything.

I also take the opportunity to bring the review unit to Bangkok and try to experience the X-S20 the same way Yuji Igarashi San and Mr. Ekkarat Punyatara have in the X-Summit (sort of).

Before I continue further, I would like to thank Ms. Carmen, Marketing Manager of Fujifilm Singapore, for arranging and loaning the X-S20 for review. By the time this post is online, the camera unit had returned back to Fujifilm Singapore.

Over here, I am sharing my opinion from a photographer’s point of view. That’s because I am not a videographer and I have limited knowledge about videography. Pardon me.

Design, Build Quality, Handling & The Shutter…

The overall design of the X-S20 is almost identical to the X-S10 with just a little change in length (127mm against 126mm), and a deeper hand grip. But what changes the most is the internal parts. First thing, it has upgraded the X-Processor to the 5th generation while keeping the X-Trans 4 sensor. Secondly, the battery has been upgraded to NP-W235. It is a great move because there was quite a lot of feedback about the NP-W126 battery life. Lastly, improvements on the ports and buttons.

The build quality gives a premium feel and does not feel like a polycarbonate-built camera, which I think is great. Unfortunately, it does not come with weather-sealed. I guess we can look forward to its successor. At 491 grams (including battery and memory card), this camera is light to carry (but also subject to what lenses you are mounting it with).

I have a big hand and my little pinky is left out with this camera but I love holding this X-S20 handgrip. I remember that mounting big lenses on the X-S10 may leave very little room space for the finger to hold the grip. With the new slightly longer and slightly slimmer grip than the X-S10, this X-S20 is more comfortable and better with the big lenses.

As for the shutter, it does not have the same satisfying mechanical shutter feedback as the X-T5 but it is just fine. Nothing to shout about.

Oh yes, the ISO & the Q buttons are now bigger than the predecessor. In my opinion, it is much better to press too.

Do note that the X-S20 is not a weather-sealed/resistance camera, if you come across heavy rain, snow, etc., do protect your camera.

Sensor and Processor

Is it a disappointment to have the old X-Trans 4 sensor? Not for me. This is a very capable sensor and it does not show its “age” just yet. I love the 26 megapixels resolution as it is a very good sweet spot for me. Yes, I do have the X-T5 and I thought 40 megapixels would make my photography life a happier one. Not quite meaningful for me after all as I don’t have a cropping habit, I do not print, and lastly, 40 megapixels resolution is quite taxing to my hard disk space.

Having a new processor, X-Processor 5, co-exist with the sensor is a good move. It actually helps to lower power consumption, improve battery life, and also helps to improve overall performance like auto-focus speed and tracking algorithm. I think it is a win-win situation.

For a note: since it is using the X-Trans 4 sensor, the base ISO is ISO 160 and not the ISO 125 like the one found in the X-Trans 5 HR sensor.

Image Quality

The pros and cons of the X-Trans 4 remain the same in this X-S20. While the image quality is much dependent on the glass we put in front of the sensor, I have no complaints about it if I used a premium Fuji prime lens.

Personally, I love the color produced by this sensor. I have no idea why but the film simulations such as the Classic Chrome and the Classic Negative seem to be better than the one found in X-Trans 5. Again it’s a personal feeling towards it.

Performance

The performance of the camera is associated with the lens it is paired with. In my course of testing, the camera works just fine and performs decently well. The camera has no issue with the third-party autofocus lenses I have on hand. (Anyway I am not expecting something weird.)

When comes to autofocus tracking, I can feel that it is more sticky to the subject than I had with the X-S10 and the autofocus tracking is also capable of tracking an object pretty far away. My guess is that the new processor provides a good improvement over here.

IBIS

With the rating at 7.0 stops, I have no scientific way to prove if the IBIS is 7 stops effective. It is also 1 stop improvement over the predecessor’s 6 stops. In layman’s testing, I am about to handheld with my XF23mm f1.4 WR at approximately 1 second.

Of course, I do have hits and misses due to my shaky hands but I think IBIS helps to reduce the motion blur caused by shaky hands and the camera shakes when I do the shutter press. If you have a more steady pair of hands, I think it will perform even better. Do note that a high shutter speed will not automatically activate the IBIS function.

Battery Life

Yuji Igarashi San took up the challenge to take over 1000 shots with the X-S20 in the X-Summit Bangkok. 1000 shots is a high benchmark for Fujifilm and I am not doubting Yuji San’s challenge will fail. At the end of the X-Summit, he shared that he had taken 1033 shots with 1 bar of battery left.

So I am very curious over here how many more shots can I take with 1 full bar of battery? So in my Bangkok trip, it took me about 2.5 days to use up one NP-W235 battery and I have a total of 1394 shots. That’s a whopping 40% more than what Fujifilm has claimed in the X-Summit.

In case someone wonders, my usage behavior is that I will turn off the camera after each use and on again. The term “use” is usually about 1-3 shots. I also use the X-app to transfer approximately 50 shots over a span of a 2.5-day period. While I believe not everyone has the same behavior as me, I suggest you consider changing to another fully charged battery when you hit between 900-1000 shots. Unless you are as adventurous as me, I think this is a safer benchmark for everyone to use.

Feedback

While there is not much “fault” that I can find with this camera throughout the test, there is one thing that I wish that Fuji would consider implementing a focus mode button like the one found in X-H2 and X-H2S (the fn3 button default setting). I know there is a “Q” function for quick access, but having the focus mode button at the bottom right corner would allow the photographer to access the focus mode even faster.

Another thing I wish to feedback on is the joystick. Since the X-S20 does not have the directional buttons like the X-T5, I hope the successor will come with a bigger joystick for navigation.

Others

The Electronic View Finder remains the same as its predecessor at 0.62x magnification and 2.36 million dot resolution. It is good enough to use but we always hope to have something bigger and better.

Like the X-S10, it comes with a built-in flash which is a nice gesture and good to have for “just in case” situations when one needs it.

In case you are a film simulation lover like me, X-S20 has the latest Nostalgic Negative film simulation. It’s a nice touch to have the newest (but not so new) film simulation integrated into this camera.

In my testing, I did encounter a high temperature warning just once and that was under the 11 a.m. sun. I understand that such a thing might happen for a camera that compacts. Anyway, there is a FAN-001 accessories that is meant for videography purposes for X-H2S and X-H2, it works on X-S20 as well.

Lastly, there is a compact charging brick included in the package, along with the typical accessories like a camera strap and USB-C cable. I do know that the packages vary across countries and regions. So the one that you received might not have the charging brick.

Who is this for?

If you are a new photographer or attempting to switch to a new system or get a second camera system, I think this is one of the best cameras for photographers to enter into Fujifilm and access their rich lens choices (including a lot of third-party lenses). But this upgrade might not be sufficient enough for the X-S10 photographers to upgrade.

In my own words

X-S20 is lightweight and capable camera. The upgrade in X-S20 is positive and considerably huge. They introduce quite a fair bit of improvement for the camera, but what I love the most is the NP-W235 battery and the brand new X-Processor 5 plus X-Trans 4 sensor. This is a new combination and this also shows how capable the combination of the processor and the battery can be. 1000+ shots are just incredible.

With the right lens, holding the X-S20 is a joy. It does not strain my waist after one whole day of holding it around. Nothing is more important than traveling comfortably with a powerful compact camera like it.

With the success of this X-S20, I hope that the X-T30II and X-E4 successor will continue with this combination.

Meike 85mm f1.8 – Probably The Best Afforable Portrait Lens Yet

Ever since Fujifilm opens up its X-mount protocol in 2020, we get to see more and more new third-party manufacturers releasing autofocus lenses for Fujifilm gradually. This is definitely a joy for Fuji photographers because we have more and more options to choose from.

Meike 85mm f1.8

Intro

This time, Meike is the manufacturer attempting with its new 85mm f1.8 but this is not the first autofocus lens from the manufacturer. Meike has manufactured another autofocus lens as early as 2018 but that is for another mount, another brand.

That said, Meike is not new to creating an autofocus lens. Let’s see how this X-mount lens performs.

Also, this is a full-frame lens that comes with E-mount and Z-mount too!

Before I proceed further, I would like to thank Meike for sharing this lens for the review. I appreciate their kindness!

Price Point

I place this section first among all. All for a reason, it is priced at 200 USD. For reference, Viotrox 85mm f1.8 II is priced at 399 USD. Let’s be realistic, we should not set the expectations sky-high for an autofocus lens with this price point and there will be some trade-offs. So it is dependent on the interested photographers willing to accept the trade-offs.

Design and Build Quality

The first thing I notice about the lens design is that it reassembles a lot to the Canon EF85mm f1.8 but is not 100% identical. The lens design gives a very simple, clean, and minimalistic look. Nothing fancy shout about. Since it gives a minimalistic look, this also means that it does not come with an aperture ring.

The lens comes with a polycarbonate build quality but I have to say that it is not the best one out there in the market. I can feel that it is more plasticky than other polycarbonate-built lenses but the 386 grams lens feels light to hold on my hand.

It comes with a 67mm filter thread size which is decent for the aperture value it gives. No comment on this. And it does come with a lens hood too! It does not come with a weather-resistance seal as well, and I think I can accept that.

Image Quality

At wide-open, the shots are acceptable. They are not clinically sharp with some lacking of contrast. The images look fine if you are not nitpicking or pixel-peeping. Vignetting and chromatic aberration are present but manageable. But if you step down to f2.8, the image quality shows improvement.

The background blur is a little harsh for my liking. The transition between the off-focused and the subject is not the best but still within my acceptability.

Focusing

All thanks to the STM stepper motor, the focusing is also pretty silent throughout my testing. Focusing surprisingly well. It gives excellent focusing speed and accuracy in most situations. I do encounter some hiccups but mostly under dim light situations and do note that some other higher price tag lenses also have very similar focusing behavior. So I think it is fair for Meike 85mm at this price point.

Minimum Focus Distance (MFD)

The MFD is 85cm and I think it is pretty okay for a 85mm lens. The image quality doesn’t get worse at wide open, it maintains the same characteristics and behavior of the lens. In my opinion, it is pretty usable for social media purposes.

Others

This lens comes with a Mirco-USB port that sits right at the rear mount where we can update the lens with future firmware for a better user experience.

Who is this for?

This is the second cheapest autofocus lens in the X-mount market. The cheapest one still belongs to TTArtisan 27mm f2.8 (149 USD).

With its affordable price point, I think this lens is very suitable for photographers who want a portrait lens but do not wish to invest in more expensive options or wish to attempt to try taking shots with this focal length (127.5mm in full frame equivalent). In terms of genres, it can be used in most of them, such as general street, product, portrait, and landscape.

Conclusion

It is not the best-built and best image-quality lens but not the worse in the market, and it is also not competing against the top tier lenses. We are coming to the end of this post, and we all know what the trade-offs are with this lens. But they are traded-off for a reason, to allow more photographers have access to this focal length at an afforable price tag. I know I have reiterate a number of time about the price tag with this lens but I just can’t help tying them together.

Based on my past experiences with Meike lenses (Meike 35mm f0.95, 60mm f2.8, 7.5mm f2.8, and 10mm f2), I believe Meike can do a great job and giving the best they have in terms of build quality and image quality if they want. But for now, they give one more option for budget-minded photographers.

Meike 10mm f2 – The Widest Lens Yet

This is Meike widest lens ever created, 10mm may not sound as wide as the recently launched XF8mm f3.5 but that does not mean this lens of Meike is not great. So when comes to the ultrawide lens, what are our expectations if we are getting one? Widest possible focal length? Brightest possible aperture? How about size, weight, and price play a part in the consideration? There is no right or wrong answer to these questions. It is up to individuals to find the best suitable lens for their wants or needs. Having said that, the Meike 10mm f2 could be the lens some photographers might be looking for.

The good people in Meike have recently shared with me the 10mm f2. I thank them for their kindness and continuous support. Making another post possible. Having said that, I stay neutral and true to myself.

Intro

This lens was announced exactly back in 1 year ago in July 2022. It is still a pretty new lens in the market. As usual, it comes with various mounts too: Canon RF, Nikon Z, Sony E, M43, and of course, the Fujifilm X mount.

Meike 10mm f2

Design and Build Quality

From my first impression, this is not the sexiest lens nor it is ugly either. It gives a unique overall design look. The most distinguishable one among other lenses is the wider front element which comes with a 77mm filter thread. If you take a closer look, the front lens is protruding, so I think this might be the factor why it obtains its unique lens look.

At 550 grams, the weight is dense when I hold it in my hand. You can imagine how many glass elements are inside this metal-built lens.

The aperture ring is de-click and smooth with very little friction, which means it benefits videographers. While it doesn’t harm much for my shoot, I do wish to see an option to click and de-click the aperture ring in their future lenses. Because with the clicky experience, I can roughly tell which aperture am I at. After all, this lens does not come with any electronic contact, hence, there is no information exchanged between the lens and the camera.

It comes with a cap-on style lens cap and if there is anyone concerned about its build material, it’s plastic. It may not feel as good as the lens body but I think it makes some sense to reduce the overall weight.

Image Quality

When comes to image quality, I think apart from how good the image quality it will be, other questions such as how good is distortion control is, how strong the vignetting is, and how heavy is the chromatic aberration. This ultrawide lens is no exception too.

To answer them one by one. The image quality is great. The subject is sharp and contrast when I shoot wide open. I am surprised by how good the results are.

I am impressed with the distortion control from this lens. I cannot say it is 100% distortion free or zero distortion because if I nitpick with it, some very minor distortion at the edge of the photo can be observed.

Vignetting is unavoidable when shooting at f2 but is not as strong as other manual lenses. As for chromatic aberration, I am shocked by how well it is controlled. At least from the shots I have taken, I am not able to find one.

Another thing that I like about this lens is its transition between the focused subject against the other. At least to me, it is very pleasing to my eyes.

If anyone is curious, the sun star result is pretty good and sharp.

Focusing

When handling the focus ring, it has the same experience as the aperture ring: smooth with little friction. Apart from the ring designs and the width of the rings, I am expecting some levels of friction difference when handling both rings but I was wrong with this lens. In my opinion, I prefer to have a bit more friction handling differences to set the aperture ring and focus ring apart. Because there are a few times when I mistakenly change the aperture ring when I am supposed to rotate the focus ring to my desired focused point. Again, that could be me only.

Like other Meike lenses I have tested thus far, it shares the same similarity when comes to focusing. The other end of the MFD is not the true infinity, the right infinity shot is where the infinity symbol is.

Minimum Focus Distance (MFD)

The MFD is 30 cm and I find it a pity as it is not as close as I expected. Probably due to engineering limitations or other technical issues, the Meike cannot make it shorter. For info, the Meike 7.5mm f2.8 fisheye lens is 15cm. But then, it is a fisheye lens and this is an ultrawide lens. Both lenses are designed differently.

So if you are looking to have some very close-up shots, this lens may not be the right choice.

Price Point

Originally priced at 449 USD but now it is priced at 349.99 USD on the Meike website. It is not the cheapest price nor it is the most expensive one among all the manual lenses. It’s somewhere in between those price ranges.

Just for some sense, the newly launched XF8mm f3.5 is selling at 799.95 USD, Viltrox AF 13mm f1.4 is 459 USD, Rokinon 12mm f2 is 248 USD, and TTArtisan 17mm 1.4 is 118 USD.

Others

Similar to other manual lenses tested, there is an obvious change in white balance whenever I change aperture values; for example f2 to f4. It does not have a real impact if you shoot in raw format. But if you are a straight-out-of-camera (SOOC) photographer, probably you might have to take note of it.

Who is this for?

As for the current market, I think there is no other lens that offers this combination (15mm in full frame equivalent and f2). For landscapes, architecture, cityscapes, and astrography photographers, you can consider getting this lens as part of your arsenal.

Although it is a manual lens, getting the right focus is not that challenging. If you have the time to spare, take your time to nail the shots or snap a few more shots with a slight change in focus range.

Conclusion

This lens is exceptionally good for its focal length. Although size and weight are the 2 drawbacks I have for this lens, it gives very usable f2 image quality shots that I cannot complain much about.

With its latest pricing (as compared to the initial launched price), I think it is a very good investment if you can accept the 2 drawbacks. If Meike management or engineers are reading this article, if you are planning to create the successor, I hope you can improve on the 2 drawbacks and possibly on the front lens element as well. I believe it will be a popular one.

Meike 7.5mm f2.8 – In My Fisheye View

As the title suggests, it’s a fisheye lens. In my opinion, the fisheye lens is a niche product and it is really up to the photographers’ creativity (pardon me I’m not the creative one) to showcase this unique point of view. Nonetheless, I try my best to share what I can do with this lens.

This is not my first time experiencing a fisheye lens. I got my very first fisheye lens from 7Artisans when I had my X-T2 not long ago and then I also tested the TTArtisan 7.5mm f2 2 years back. In other words, a fisheye lens is not something I am not that unfamiliar with. Oh yes, this is a diagonal fisheye lens and not a circular fisheye lens.

Intro

This Fisheye lens from Meike was announced quite some time ago, in May 2022, which translates to a year-ish from the time this post is live. But it is still worth trying out with the new 40 megapixels sensor from Fujifilm.

For a note: It comes with various APS-C mounts (namely Canon EF-M, Fujifilm X, Nikon Z, and Sony E mount camera systems) and Micro Four Thirds mount too. Meike also released a couple of fisheye lenses (both diagonal and circular type) but this 7.5mm is probably the sexiest one among them.

Before continuing, I would like to express my gratitude to Meike for sharing this lens with me. Without their support, this post will not be able to be here today.

Design and Build Quality

The first thing you will get to notice is how well the lens is constructed. Visually, it’s a very compact fisheye lens, not as compact as a pancake lens but still compact. Unfortunately, like other Fisheye lenses, it is not possible to place a filter in front of the protruding lens. Oh yes, it comes with a built-in lens hood like most other fisheye lenses do too.

With its 260 grams, it doesn’t feel that heavy when I had it on hand. It feels a little bit dense but overall it does feel good on hand and is well-balanced.

At 7.5mm, it is equivalent to 11.25mm in 35mm format. This focal length is also probably the widest focal length among all landscape-oriented lenses. In case someone wonders, its angle of view is 190° diagonal, 161.8° horizontal, and 106.5° vertical.

Rotating the aperture ring is a pleasure, its clicky ring gives me a gentle satisfying experience to me. And like all Meike lenses I have tested so far, it comes with a rear metal bayonet too.

Image Quality

From my first impression, I am surprised by how sharp and contrasting it is at wide-open. And it is consistent at all focus ranges. However, the corners of the shots can be a little soft if ever one wonders. The fall-off between the subject and the foreground/background is smooth and blends quite well.

Although it has very mild vignetting, it also has good chromatic aberration control. I think I can ignore about doing post-processing because it is unnoticeable unless you are looking for it intentionally.

Another good surprise is how well the lens resolves around the newly developed sensor. No complain here.

Lastly, it does render very good sun star with very sharp star edges. However, background blur/bokeh is not something majestic and jaw-dropping, but it does its job well on subject separation. Anyway, I don’t think this is something most photographers are looking for in a fisheye lens.

Focusing

Like most of the Meike lenses I have tested thus far, the manual focus ring on this lens is smooth with very gentle friction. Oh yes, it rotates approximately 50° from Minimum Focus Distance to Infinity. It seems a little shorter than other lenses but it just works well with the focus precision with this focal length.

Minimum Focus Distance (MFD)

With an MFD of 15cm, I hope it can go a little closer like 10cm or so. Because I think there will give a more interesting and creative point of shot if it is able to shoot at a shorter MFD.

Don’t get me wrong, 15cm is still impressive and it is a marvel achievement for a small and compact lens. The image results in retent the good sharpness and contrast at MFD. This is really stunning.

Price Point

Formally priced at USD 149, USD 139 is the new price it is going for on the Meike website. I think the price is pretty decent for the quality of this lens.

Others

Because it is an ultrawide lens and also such a compact lens. Depending on how you place your left index finger on the camera body, it can be within the field of view and will be part of the photo taken. At least this happens to my huge clumsy index finger saying hi to some of the photos taken.

One thing I am a little disappointed about is the lens cap. Although I wish the lens cap is made out of metal, it turns out to be a plastic one. After a while, I think it is fine but the lens cap happened to be quite loose. I am not sure if this just happened to be my unit. Nonetheless, this is the case.

Like most manual lenses, it does suffer from white balance shifting from one aperture to the other. If you are doing in raw format, it is not much of a concern. If you are a Straight-Out-Of-Camera photographer, do take note.

One last thing to note is that, although it comes with a built-in lens hood, it can still suffer with lens flare.

Who is this for?

With this focal length, it makes suitable for landscapes, cityscapes, and astrography. But I believe creative minds and photographers who want to explore the beauty of the fisheye lens are welcome. If you ask me if there is any particular genre that is good with this lens, my answer to you is that I think it can suit almost every genre. As long as you know what you are looking for.

Conclusion

This lens is definitely one of the few primes lenses that I will bring for oversea travels. Not only it gives a whole new perspective to the places that I visit, it is also a good selfie/wefie lens.

Meike did a good job in creating such a beautifully crafted fisheye lens. Great image quality and compact size are one of the best selling points for this lens. Not forgetting that the price is reasonable and affordable for any photographer who wants to attempt to try out this lens. It is surely another good attempt from Meike in broadening its portfolio with this lens.
